Political repression occurs when those in government or positions of power abuse that power to dominate their citizens and stifle dissent. So basic rights like freedom of speech, personal freedom, and equality are gone.
In India, freedom of speech is a fundamental right but it does get curtailed at times. For instance, journalists and activists have been booked under laws including UAPA and sedition for criticising the government. At times, they themselves have been pressured or banned, limiting free expression and sowing fear among citizens. Political repression affects even the freedom of the individual. Instances of arrests without speedy trials are also reported along with detention of activists and protestors for long periods. During several protests, including that against the CAA–NRC several persons were detained, as many of them have questioned the misuse of power and violation of personal freedom.
Political repression has a chilling effect on social and economic life in India. Shutdowns of the internet imposed by governments in Jammu and Kashmir, and during protests in other parts of the country, have disrupted schooling, commerce, and the flow of information. “When people are not able to communicate, you become less developed, less innovative.
To sum up, political repression adversely affect civil right in India. India is a democracy, but for it to live up to its promise and truly value democratic principles, it will need to protect free speech, enforce the law fairly, and hold the authorities accountable.
An informed, fearless and active citizenry is essential for a healthy democracy.
